Wednesday September 3rd, 2008 17:19 Agony of Waiting

A week after the exams ended, I’m again back to square one: anxiously waiting for the results of the doomed exam. When the last block before this ended, I was so determined to do really well for the next set of exams but as one week ended after the next, I found myself cramming my papers, literally neglecting my reviewers and entering that vicious cycle that ate me up all over again. I knew I was in for trouble and as the results of the exams are released one by one, I’d no longer be surprised if I failed one or two of them.

Whew.

I knew medical school would be difficult, but I never imagined I’d live such a lousy life like this.

Monday August 25th, 2008 01:23 The Bingo Blues

I miss my grandmother. I can’t believe it’s been four years since my grandmother passed away. Her death was very sudden so it took me a long time to accept it and finally move on. My memories of my grandmother are ambivalent actually. At one end is an ugly scar I have on my cheek due to her persistence to make me take my medicines when I was a little kid; and on the other end, are the fond memories of her and our fun Bingo-filled days. Sadly, these are all just that – memories that are forever etched in my mind.

My grandmother introduced me to the game of bingo. Actually, I already had an idea how it was being played before I had my first chance to play the game. One fine day, she brought home this old school set of the game one fine afternoon. It was surely a big hit in the family as we found ourselves playing the game every weekend. The pot money was dismal – each card was worth only 50 cents (that’s in PHP and it’s currently PHP 45.00 to a dollar) but we didn’t really mind ‘coz bingo sessions were considered as bonding sessions of the family. I even remember how on an out-of-town trip to Tagaytay, our family brought the Bingo game along and had a lot of fun playing in a rented cottage despite the very strong winds at Picnic Groove. (Imagine how difficult it was to keep the cards from flying away!) I don’t exactly know how and why the weekly Bingo sessions ended but we sure did have a lot of fun during those days when everyone in the family was addicted to it.

I find the present time very much different now though. The board games we used to love and spend a lot of time  within the family and circle of friends have now crossed over to the online world. Recently, a new website offering online bingo has emerged to coax the lovers of the game out of hibernation. It was quite inevitable to find the games we love online as we already live in a fast-paced and high-tech world.

Bingoheads will surely find the bingo offers at this new website gaming arena simply irresistible. God only knows how far a free £10 sign up bonus could go a long, long way with the right amount of luck. The 200% bonus is a blessing (not in disguise though) to new players making their first deposit to fund their accounts. But the fun doesn’t just stop there because every player is assured of a 50% bonus for every succeeding deposits a player makes. And of course, I don’t think I have to mention how beating all odds to keep your cards from flying off to netherland is now just a thing of the past. Aren’t those enough reasons to try your luck playing bingo at bet365?

My grandmother didn”t exactly know how to use the internet, much more how to play the game online, but if she were still alive, for sure she’d be amazed at how her favorite bingo game has adapted to the modern times. =)

Saturday August 2nd, 2008 00:18 No Needles for Me

The irony of my chosen career is that I’d be dealing with a lot of needlework in the future yet I hate getting shots myself. Yes. This future doctor is a scaredy-cat when it comes to needles (or any sharp object for that matter).

This afternoon, I had to swallow my fear and get a hold of myself as I faced the needle for my long overdue Hepa B shots. While a vast majority of my classmates had theirs way back freshman year, I had mine only this year simply because I loathed the needle. Actually, I had a dose of Hepa B shot way back freshman year in college, but I wasn’t sure if i was able to complete the doses or not. For me to get away with not having my shots, I had to have my blood tested for the Hepa B antibodies. So off I went to a diagnostic lab only to find out the next day that I had low anti-Hepa B titer which meant I needed to take the shots. No ifs and buts! The first dose was scheduled last Monday but my selective memory loss decided I should forget about it and remember only when it’s already the last school day of the week.

I think I haven’t had that many needles poked into me in the last 6 months compared with the rest of my existence. For the past half-a-year. I’ve had to endure three of them: the first was one of the injectable treatments for acne, the second was for the blood test and the third one being the first dose of Hepa B shots. I think the last time I had someone take a blood sample from me was close to five years ago for dengue screening.

Right now my left upper arm still hurts. It feels like a couple of guys punched me on the arm. There’s a tiny red dot on the lateral side of my upper arm to remind me of the horrible needlework done on me today. I’m supposed to get another shot on the first of September. Great.

Saturday July 26th, 2008 23:48 Pearlized

I chose to wear pearls for the wedding. I noticed how I’ve been constantly wearing Swarovski jewelries to formal events but never have I been photographed in pearls. Pearls are great to wear in formal events like these. It’s a must-see in every girl’s jewelry box alongside those fancy handcrafted jewelry. If you’re suddenly invited to a formal gathering, you can just grab a pair of simple pearl earrings and you’re good to go. They are simple yet looks really classy. Much like Audrey Hepburnish. And yes. They look really great in pictures.

Saturday July 26th, 2008 23:41 Off the Baby Bottle

It’s been four years since Bryant was born. He celebrated his 4th birthday with a small gathering a few weeks ago just in time with his father’s arrival from Dubai. He’s already four and yet he still drinks milk from a baby bottle. I don’t exactly remember how young I was when my mom weaned me off the bottle but definitely I never did have to bring my bottle of milk to school. My cousin’s has already started schooling and has already started learning his ABCs. I think he should be weaned off soon. Kids his age should be off the bottle already since drinking milk in a bottle is associated with having increased prevalence of dental caries in their age group. Good thing milk bottles are just the problem with him. I’d just die if he’s still on some baby disposable diaper.

Thursday July 10th, 2008 21:44 Off to Get That New Look

I’ve been wearing prescription glasses since sixth grade. I remember the first time I visited an optical clinic to have my eyes checked. I wasn’t able to get my glasses that same day because apparently, my pair was extra special because my eyesight was a lot worse than what I had thought. I started wearing glasses with my right eye at 2.75 and my left at 2.00. No wonder I had to squint (until I got wrinkles on my forehead) while in class! My eyesight was terrible! I started my lifelong commitment with a pair of eyeglasses that year. Back when I was younger, I wouldn’t care less if the frame wasn’t in style but when I grew older and became more aware of my looks, I started craving for better frames. The more stylish, the better! Although I now wear colored contact lenses more often, I still haven’t fully given up my glasses. No one can wear contact lenses 24/7 and in my case, a pair of eyeglasses is still a necessity especially when I’m at home and putting my tired eyeballs at rest.

Everytime I visit the optometrist, I gawk at those branded and very very pricey glasses that stare back at me through their glass enclosures. They’re very pretty, yes, but I wonder… does someone really shell out that much for a frame? I know I won’t because I change my lenses every year and doing so is a little impractical on my part. Good thing, staying pretty and fashionable doesn’t mean that you have to spend an arm and a foot to get yourself a lovely pair of frames. Take for example Zenni Optical, a specialty online store for prescription glasses where you can get a complete set of fashionable prescription glasses for as low as $8. The store offers an array of incredible stylish new frames from Zenni – their own manufactured brand. By offering exclusively designed frames from their own line straight to the customer and removing the hassles of middlemen from the picture, Zenni Optical is able to offer stylish and durable yet very affordable prescription glasses. Choose from their wide range of frames made from metal, plastic/acetate, stainless steel, memory titanium, pure titanium, aluminum alloy or mixed material.  A variety of rimless, half-rim and full-rim frames are also available; or perhaps, the variable dimension frames from Zenni will take your fancy.

I’ve been using my current frame for the last two years and it’s high time to buy myself a new one. I’m actually thinking of getting one of those Zenni Optical $ 8 Rx Eyeglasses online. This one took my fancy. What do you think?

UPDATES!

Zenni Optical was on Fox news recently. Click to watch.
